Eating healthily is not easy for most of us, although it is possible to make more sensible eating choices, without completely giving up what you like. The following simple tips for a healthy diet will help you to keep on track.
Start improving your diet by making small changes, such as using olive oil instead of butter, or eating salad with your meal once a day. Try cutting back on both salt and sugar; this can and should be done gradually. A regular 12 ounce soda contains around 10 teaspoons of sugar and there are plenty of sugar-free alternatives. If you like to snack between meals, have some crackers, fruit or vegetables handy instead of chips and cookies. If you must satisfy your sweet tooth, raisins make a sweet and tasty substitute.
Of course, we all know that we should eat our vegetables, and one way to do that is to make a meal centered on vegetables rather than meat, such as a soup or stir-fry dish. If you are grilling outside, vegetable kabobs are easy to prepare and make a great substitute for grilled meat. Try steaming vegetables, rather than boiling them, as boiling removes the nutrients and you may even find they taste better steamed. When buying canned vegetables, always look for those that are low sodium; for fresh vegetables, buy those that are in season, for more flavor.
Portion size is important, especially when eating out as many restaurants serve meals that are simply too large. At home, using smaller plates can help to reduce the amount of food you eat. Most people have no idea what a realistic serving size is, and a serving of fish, meat or chicken should be about the size of a pack of playing cards. When dining out, consider splitting an entree with someone else, ordering a starter as your meal and asking for a box as soon as your meal arrives, then immediately putting half your food in there to be taken home.
Simple changes in your routine and diet can be effective over time. When buying meat, look for cuts that are leaner, such as beef round and flank steak. Consider switching to skimmed milk – after a while, you simply will not notice the difference. Virtually all dairy products are available in a healthy or low fat alternative, which generally tastes much the same and costs no more than the regular product.
